Don’t know about Kalihi start but prior to current Kaimuki Av location, Sekiyas had a small saimin stand Diamond Head of Kapahulu Ave I would sometimes go w/ my dad w/ an aluminum pot to stand in a long line w/ other pot holders and take home saimin for family dinner 😛No S&S Saimin or Sun Noodles those days. Yeh, I’m that old 🤭

What happened to chuckys

Its like watching a Sci-fy time travel movie to the future listening to people discussing topics of what life must have been like with long-long ago. By eating modernized version of foods that no longer exist as it has been altered so much. Today's foods have so much more processed items, sugars, wheat, shoyu, rice, gmo veggies and preservatives that its really not even the same. It makes me sad knowing our descendants are experiencing "tourist" versions of our indigenous culturally blended planation based foods. I have been on a health journey since "shutdown" to heal my body by eating foods that existed 400 years ago from the Pacific basin and its been so ono and body rejuvenating, eliminating my chronic inflammation, diabetes, alzheimer's, dementia, heart disease, ultra morbidity obesity, macular degeneration, osteoporosis, arthritis and brain fog. By making all these foods this generation is reviewing the original way using forgotten methods and ending cancer from my Japanese, Okinawan and Hawaiian bloodlines and all the permutation of insulin resistances issues. I hope the next generation figures out modern foods are not good for cultures of the Pacific soon. If I could go back to the 1800's I would warn my ancestors not to be like the westerners and hold-on their more advanced food technologies.

In my opinion Zippys has become too commercialized. Over priced and they took great things off their menu. Last time I was at a zippys I also had horrible service. Zippys chicken is my 2nd favorite, but so over priced.

Today I ate at Leeward Drive-in. I got the exact same Saimin and fried chicken that you guys got and it was perfect. Right on! Sending love for you guys 😃

Thanks, guys. I was there starting in '69 on the Big Island, and on Oahu several times in the early '80s but haven't been back since. Reminds me of back in the day, but does no diner or other place have Harmha? Or has that kind of fallen out of favor? One of the first things I ever ate in Hilo, and despite what it did to my stomach, I loved it, and went back a few times for a taste. I know I need to get back there (and then on to Thailand and the rest of Asia, but I also know I need to start my partner on some ohana food. Hopefully, soon. You kids rock, and I'm happy to see you representing the real.

worked buy an hawain store in seattle had that thing warp in seeweed with the ham in it it was so good.

In fact, better chinese food than most places in Asia outside of China and Taiwan with much larger portions and quality ingredients.

Thank you for covering all those places - especially L&L drive-in. I (Scott) grew up in the two story apartment right behind L&L (dairy) in the 60s. Haven’t stopped by the place since (even though my brother still lives on the next block). Thinking of visiting Liliha Bakery next time I go back to Oahu (haven’t eaten there since the 60s though have gotten there coco puffs from the bakery side a few years ago). I was even an assistant manager at Zippy’s in the 80s but only worked at the McCully store while I was a trainee. Thanks for all the good memories! 😊😊😊

Super nostalgic old-school comfort food I grew up with at all the original locations, except I’ve only been to the Kaka’ako Highway Inn and never been to Leeward Drive In (too far from town). You hit all of my favorite spots and most of my favorite orders, so everything was so familiar and looked so ‘ono, but you showed and described each item really clearly and “appetizingly” for people who did not grow up eating this food as we did. Great job! I think I’ll go up the street to St. Louis Drive In for lunch today and get a Super Japanese Deluxe Plate (Japanese Deluxe Plate with scallops)!

We are visiting Oahu in July. Looking forward to trying out some of the places to eat that you reviewed.

What a great idea to swap the rice with fries at L and L for comfort food. Will try that on a rainy day. Thank you for sharing your experiences. My boyfriend and I use you for inspiration when we go on car rides around Oahu.
